There are many benefits to minimally invasive therapy for varicose veins, including:
Endovascular Laser Treatment (EVLT)
The treatment itself takes less than an hour. First, the area to be treated is numbed with a local anesthetic. Then, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein using a special tube called a sheath. Once the fiber is positioned properly, laser energy is applied as the physician slowly pulls the fiber through the length of the vein. Delivered in short pulses, the laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Once it’s sealed, healthy veins take over and redirect bloodflow back toward the heart.
Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged, and you can return to normal daily activity right away. However, strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks. You may experience some bruising or soreness for 3 to 5 days. Walking or taking over-the-counter pain relievers helps relieve any remaining discomfort.
Micro Phlebectomy
Just like the EVLT, the Micro Phlebectomy is also done within a doctor’s office. This particular treatment consists of removing varicose veins through tiny incisions. This particular procedure takes less than an hour to complete. You can return to your day-to-day functions quickly. There’s no hospital stay, general anesthetic or IV required. It can be performed with a local anesthetic with an oral sedation (or without). There is little or no risk of blood loss, infection or other side effects. Most of all, there is very little or no scarring which is a concern among many people.
Ambulatory phlebectomy micro-extraction is a medical procedure that allows for the removal of large surface varicose veins through very small incisions that require no stitches. Unlike traditional vein ligation and stripping, it can be performed in a doctor's office.
During the procedure, the physician makes micro-incisions or needle punctures as small as 1mm in diameter in your leg. He or she then uses a phlebectomy hook to extract the varicose vein through the micro-incision or needle puncture. With this procedure, a compression bandage is worn for 2 weeks. This minimizes swelling and discomfort and allows for proper healing.
Are there Any Risks of Varicose Vein Treatments?
Regardless of what medical procedure you undergo, there is always some level of risk involved. Patients experience mild complications as a result of varicose vein treatments such as swelling, bruising, etc. Prior to any treatment, we require a complete medical history and a medical examination. Our goal is for each of our patients to experience a safe recovery and great results.
